"Vanishing Florida" is a photographic exhibition presented by members of Photo Salon, a group of photographers which meets biweekly at the Armory Art Center.
Vanishing Florida continues its exhibition schedule with its sixth exhibition, at the Palm Beach State College, Eissey Campus Theatre Lobby Gallery, from April 5 - May 1, 2011. Hours are Monday - Friday, 11am - 4pm, and for one hour before performances. It can be seen at other times by appointment.
This exhibition of works was selected by Charles Stainback, the William and Sarah Ross Soter Curator of Photography at the Norton Museum of Art,
Members of Photo Salon have captured many images that explored the beauty and charm, the people, places and things they’ve found most interesting in South Florida. Sixteen members responded to a suggestion to create an exhibition that would highlight the changes taking place in our state. From the beaches to high rises, from urban areas to the countryside, the project was intended to present images that were quickly disappearing from view.
The photographs produced by this shared vision led to "Vanishing Florida", a tribute to the eroding beaches and failing seawalls, vintage buildings and architecture, endangered wildlife, small towns, and native Floridians who have long called this state home.
Photo Salon was founded by Marie Marzi, a nationally published photojournalist who teaches at the Armory. It is modeled on New York Photo Salon. Membership is open to all interested photographers. Members share and critique each others' work, and learn from each others' experience.
Since its inception in 2007, this dedicated group has met every other Thursday night, summer and winter at the Armory Art Center. It attracts a varied and interesting group of photographers, ranging from professionals to emerging artists.
The photographers in the exhibition include Greg Allikas, Emalee Andre, Patti Boxold, Don Durfee, Pat Festino, Kurt Hammerstein, Marie Marzi, Dori McKearn, David Mendelow, Ray Neubert, Carol-Ann Rogus, Elle Schorr, Jackee Swinson, Robert Swinson, Ted Tribolati and Robert Vail.
