GEORGE'S HARDWARE
Size: 18" x 24"  Edition: 25

Chris Spring started working for George's Hardware when he was in high school. Now he owns it. In this age of franchised big-box stores, Chris still remembers what an old-time hardware store should be. At George's, you can buy just one screw, or find a part for an old window.

SHUFFLEBOARD
Size: 18" x 24"  Edition: 25

I went to the Lake Worth Shuffleboard Courts hoping to find a few white-haired couples practicing for winter tournaments. But the facility is now used for Human Resources. A couple dozen young Latino males were waiting for work. Miguel Mejia is from Guatemala and speaks little English. He was hoping to be chosen for work this day.

GREG ALLIKAS
Realistic photography using restrained Photoshop technique

Artist's Statement

Trained as an artist, I am preoccupied with the arrangement of shapes and tones within the four sides of a photograph, regardless of subject. I like to force a composition and work the edges. Cropped heads and limbs, or petals and sepals...I like that tension. I use clean photographic technique that produces photographs that look like photographs and Photoshop only toward that end. I have a series of soft artsy florals that I like a lot too...but they still look like photographs. I love all kinds of photography; it is both my profession and my hobby. Street photography has to be at the top of my list though. Some photographers get a rush from capturing a beautiful sunset or rare wildlife...for me the moment of capturing a perfect expression or juxtaposition of people against their surroundings can't be beat. I like the quirkiness of our world and being able to record it in, as Cartier-Bresson said, a decisive moment. A split second seen as only I see it, that with my camera I can preserve for eternity.

Biography

Greg Allikas has been a commercial photographer in the Palm Beaches and is noted for his large library of stage photography. However, he is best known the world over for his brilliant photographs of orchids. His extensive knowledge of his subject and artistic background offer a unique interpretation that is both accurate, and stunningly beautiful. The book "Orchids" (Thunder Bay Press, 2000), co-authored with Ned Nash, features over 200 of his photos. In November 2005, Thunder Bay Press published a second Allikas-Nash book, "The World's Most Beautiful Orchids" which features over 500 photographs and 450 pages of! text. A third Allikas-Nash collaboration; "Four Seasons of Orchids". has been published by Creative Homeowner. In 2005 Allikas was honored to consult on, and supply photography for a United Nations Postal Administration endangered species stamp release featuring 12 endangered orchid species. Yet in a strange twist of fate, Greg tells us that his true love is B&W street photography. You have to see it.
